The Vatican is the smallest independent country in the world and the center of the Catholic Church. It is located within the city of Rome, Italy, and is home to the Pope and the Roman Curia, the central governing body of the Catholic Church. The Vatican also includes St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Vatican Library. The Vatican City State was established as an independent state in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Italy. The Pope, as the Bishop of Rome, is both the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church and the head of state of the Vatican City State.
